Brandy is a spirit drink with an alcoholic strength of between 36 and 45 degrees (ᴼ) obtained from the distillation of wine and aged in oak barrels.
It is the raw materials from which it is distilled which fundamentally differentiate brandy from other distilled drinks, and it could be considered the noblest of all being distilled from wine, as against the barley, molasses or potatoes used in the production of other spirits. In the case of Brandy de Jerez, in addition to the nobility of the raw material of origin, there are a whole series of factors that make it an absolutely unique and exclusive distillate from the Marco de Jerez. In the Sherry production zone, the term “bodega” applies not only to the buildings where brandy is produced and aged but also to the companies dedicated to this activity. In the following section, information can be found on several of the bodega members of the Brandy de Jerez Council known in Spanish as The Consejo Regulador Especifica de Brandy de Jerez. Currently, they sell their brandies both nationally and internationally and many of these companies are on their own, sufficiently representative of the history and quality of Brandy de Jerez. Bodegas Barbadillo was founded in 1827 by Benigno Barbadillo in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Almost 200 years later Barbadillo is still a family owned business and owns bodegas in other Spanish wine regions as well, such as Ribera del Duero and Somontano. Over 40% of the firm’s products are exported to over 15 countries. |
