The beautiful little Moorish town of Níjar, a pristine white town in the foothills of the Sierra Alhamilla, is best known for its glazed pottery and handwoven rugs known as jarapas. Níjar pottery still carries the remarkable Arabic design and colours from centuries gone by. There are two ceramic workshops in the lower part of the town and such is the fame of this time honoured tradition that many artists and craftsmen have come from many parts of the world to live and work here. This influx of outside creative talent has had the effect of inspiring local potters to experiment with new designs and colours, which is bringing even more success and popularity to this flourishing industry.

The tradition of pottery and ceramics is due to the need to transport and store water in a climate so dry. Nowadays the production is focused on the decorative pieces, as typical glazed containers from Níjar, produced using the technique of "chinado" giving to the pieces a blue ornamentation. These colors blue and green ceramic visually distinguished the pieces made in Níjar.

The municipality of Níjar, the fourth largest in Spain, covers the area of Cabo de Gata to Sierra Alhamilla. The town of Níjar sits at the foothills of the Sierra Alhamilla and it is one of the most notable Andalusian pottery centres, made up of an urban centre defined by the Arabic structure that still remains and where most the pottery workshops are located.

Merging with houses and shops, some of these workshops are warehouses attached to private houses and others are old houses that have been converted, forming an organised outline based on the existence of a sculpting room and a drying and storing room, with the basin and wash bowl system for preparing the clay and the kilns normally situated in an interior patio or clearing.

Characterised by the production of such typical pieces like pitchers, whistles or waterwheel conduits, the method of glazing of the pieces is one of the most distinctive of the province. Covered with white kaolin before being varnished, the decoration of the implements is normally carried out by women, very often using plant or branches as motifs and Chinese motifs applied in the shape of spouts and also decorated with reliefs.
