Men's Ibiza Tupida Traditional Espardenyes
These espadrilles are straight out of the traditional costume worn in the ball pagès, the traditional peasants dance in Ibiza. These traditional espadrilles have been made by artisans of the island of Ibiza during centuries. These flat sandals are crafted with pita line and jute soles (protected by a thin rubber line) and will mold to your feet after a couple of wears.
Production of the espardenya is in no way an easy job, indeed it is a laborious process which must be carried out with great expertise. Firstly the natural fibre from the pitera plant must be extracted. Next, its leaves are cut and scraped by hand to create fine pieces of thread which are then used to make the cordellí – strands of fibre used to weave the design of the sandal. The cordellí is made by Mar, our Ibiza artisan, and she takes around two or three days to create them, Mar then uses the cordellí to weave what will eventually become the espadrilles on a jute rubber-lined sole. Each pair requires 25 metres of cordellí and one whole day of work.
SIZE GUIDE: The Ibiza traditioanl espadrille fits big to size therefore we recommend taking a size down from your actual size.

If you look at the feet of the dancers, you can feel the archaic character of the ball pagès. The movements of the men and the women are quite different; while men constantly bounce and jump, and cast large castanets to arouse the woman, the woman behaves hieratically and with very gentle movements to emphasize her curves while she is lateral or in front of the man. The symbolic force of these female movements, which represent the different phases of the moon, gives you the origin of these dances, because Tanit, the goddess of the moon, was the goddess of Ibiza.
